Grant training (16 July 2019)

at TÜBINGEN Max Planck Campus: "Turning an idea into a project and a career opportunity".

June 25, 2019

The workshop will focus on career perspectives for young researchers in the grant & fellowships world, and more particularily on the challenge of turning an innovative scientific idea into a competitive research proposal that succeeds in funding programmes. It will take place on 16 July 2019, 09:00 - 16:00, at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Max-Planck-Ring 11 (MRZ seminar room, 0.A.03).

Part I will address the major principles & policies that guide the various programme families ('funding landscape') and present a selection of national and international fellowships and grants (Marie-Curie, Humboldt, Volkswagen, Fritz-Thyssen, DAAD, DFG, ERC etc.). In addition, we will discuss career effects of the programmes and take a look at funding "basics" like the 'self-assessment' wrt grant applications, the choice of the host institution, individual vs. collaborative research, 'research ethics', etc.

Part II will provide insights into scientific grant writing and offer a very personal perspective of a Max Planck research group leader at FML on "Grantsmanship".

Part III will give the floor to an experienced scientific reviewer and his reflections about 'Dos and Don'ts' of grant writing from an evaluator's perspective.

Part IV will offer a proposal simulation game which allows for a hands-on preparation of a proposal outline (based on a realistic scenario), including evaluation/discussion, feedback, and tips on how to apply these sim game insights to other fellowships/grants.

Who can participate?

Part I - III of the session (09:00 - 12:15) will be open to PhD students, post-doc researchers, and junior group leaders of the Max Planck Institutes for Biological Cybernetics and for Developmental Biology (incl. the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory). Potential applicants for a fellowship or grant programme in 2019/20 are particularly encouraged to attend.

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems are welcome to register as well, but will be invited to attend depending on available places only.

As regards the proposal simulation game (Part IV, 13:00 - 16:00), we plan to run one or two groups with a maximum of 12 participants each. First come, first served (12+ registrations - per group - start a waiting list for the simulation).

The training sessions will be held in English and are free of charge.
